Light harvesting donor-acceptor assemblies are indispensable to efficiently tap photons. In an attempt to improve the light harvesting efficiency of an acceptor doped assembly, the authors design and synthesize a donor-acceptor-donor triad which exhibits an exceptional intramol. energy transfer with excellent efficiency. Also, a facile cascade energy transfer (energy funneling) is observed in the presence of 2nd acceptors (63-91% efficiency) with tunable emission colors. Self-assembled nanosheets formed by the triad in the presence of acceptors exhibit cascade energy transfer assisted tunable emission. Use of chiral acceptors induces chirality to the triad and gave chiral nanosheets along with cascade energy transfer. Here chiral induction, nanosheet formation and cascade energy transfer in the presence of chiral acceptors are used as tools to probe the intercalation of acceptor mols. in the donor scaffold.

Two indolo[3,2-b]carbazole (ICZ)-based polymers were designed and synthesized using Sonogashira cross-coupling based on dibromoindolo[3,2-b]carbazoles and 2,7-diethynylfluorene or 9,10-diethynylanthracene. The 2, 8 positions of the ICZ moiety was used for the bridging of arylene ethynylene structure to form the polymer backbone. The characterization was done by FTIR, 1H NMR, UV-visible and (UV-visible) fluorescence spectroscopic methods. The polymers, moderately soluble in aprotic and chlorinated solvents, possess thermal stability >300°. The band gap examinations, executed through cyclic voltammetry and complemented by UV-visible studies, indicated their semiconducting nature and the possibility for their use for the fabrication of polymer solar cells and for optical switching applications. The new diethynylindolocarbazole systems act as Broensted acid sensors as well as a Hg2+ receptors. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2018, 135, 46940.

Photophys. and photovoltaic properties of donor-acceptor type fluorene-anthracene and benzothiadiazole based copolymers were investigated. Bulk heterojunction polymer solar cells were fabricated. The distinction of the two polymers lies in the difference between the donor-acceptor ratios. We have compared their photovoltaic performances and investigated the effect of thickness of blend films on the device performance. The polymer having higher fluorene content exhibited higher photovoltaic performance. We have also observed that one of the polymers depending on the donor-acceptor ratio can act both as a donor and an acceptor in bulk heterojunction polymer solar cells. The solar cells fabricated from thinner blend films showed better photovoltaic performance. It was observed that the thickness slightly affects the morphol. of the blend films.

Ru(II)-metallomacrocycles containing 4-pyridyl-1,2,3-triazole moiety were realized by coordination-driven self-assembly. All new compounds were characterized by ESI-MS, elemental anal., 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopies. The mol. structure of metallomacrocycle 8 was established by single-crystal x-ray crystallog. The anticancer activities of metallomacrocycles 58 were evaluated by cytotoxicity, cell cycle anal., and related protein expression. Metallomacrocycle 7 showed greatest cytotoxicity in HepG2 human hepatocellular carcinoma cells. Apoptotic HepG2 cells were analyzed when metallomacrocycle 7 was treated. The results suggest that metallomacrocycle 7 induce liver cancer cell death by increasing apoptosis and cell cycle arrest and that it has potential use as an agent for the treatment of human hepatocellular carcinoma.

Two fluorescent mols. with an alkynylanthracene core and pyrene end-cappers were synthesized and fully characterized. Carbazole moieties are introduced into one mol. at the C9 position of the fluorene linkages to enhance the hole-transport ability of the mol. and to reduce intermol. interactions. Both compounds exhibit high thermal stabilities and narrow energy bandgaps. Single-layer polymer light-emitting diodes (PLEDs) based on poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene) (PFO) doped with the synthesized compounds exhibit excellent performance. A PLED with 0.2% of dopant 7 had a high luminance efficiency of 10.7 ± 0.3 cd A-1 as well as a brightness of 1400 cd m-2 at a c.d. of 13 mA cm-2, and a low turn on voltage (3.1 V) at a brightness of 10 cd m-2. A maximum brightness of 20,500 ± 1400 cd m-2 at 7 V was also measured. The high efficiency of the device’s performance is attributed to the good electron and hole trapping ability of the dopants, which possess suitable energy levels as compared to those of PFO.

Conjugated donor-acceptor copolymers comprised of electron-deficient 1,4,5,8-naphthalenetetracarboxylic diimide (NDI) linked to a series of relatively electron-rich aromatics via ethynyl spacers were synthesized and characterized. While LUMO levels remained constant at -3.75 eV, HOMO levels were sensitive to the relatively electron-rich aromatic donors and systematically tuned from -5.68 to -5.17 eV. Regardless of the electron-rich comonomer, fluorescence and x-ray diffraction data were consistent with the polymer chains being assembled through the stacking of NDI moieties in an offset face-to-face fashion rather than alternating donor-acceptor stacks.

Expanded π-systems with a narrow HOMO-LUMO band gap encounter deactivation of excitons due to the “energy gap law” and undesired aggregation. This dilemma generally thwarts the near-IR (NIR) luminescence of organic π-systems. A sophisticated cofacially stacked π-system is known to involve exponentially tailed disorder, which displays exceptionally red-shifted fluorescence even as only a marginal emission component. Enhancement of the tail-state fluorescence might be advantageous to achieve NIR photoluminescence with an expected collective light-harvesting antenna effect as follows: (i) efficient light-harvesting capacity due to intense electronic absorption, (ii) a long-distance exciton migration into the tail state based on a high spatial d. of the chromophore site, and (iii) substantial transmission of NIR emission to circumvent the inner filter effect. Suppression of aggregation-induced quenching of fluorescence could realize collective light-harvesting antenna for NIR-luminescence materials. This study discloses an enhanced tail-state NIR fluorescence of a self-standing porphyrin film at 1138 nm with a moderate quantum efficiency based on a fully π-conjugated porphyrin that adopts an amorphous form, called “porphyrin glass”.

Novel anthracene-layered polymers containing fluorescence quenchers such as ferrocene and nitrobenzene units at the polymer termini were designed and synthesized. Their optical properties were studied in detail. The photoluminescence spectra of the polymers were featureless without vibrational structures, indicating that the anthracenes are effectively interacting each other in a single polymer chain in the excited state. Fluorescence emission from the layered anthracene units was effectively quenched by the aromatic units at the polymer termini owing to energy and electron transfer through a single polymer chain. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
