This paper is focused on studying corrosion protection of cold-rolled steel with alkyd paint coatings comprising nano-size alumina and either polystyrene-sulfonate (PSS) modified or sulfonated multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) supported polypyrrole (PPy). Single layer coatings (in thickness of 40 ± 5 μm) comprising PPy deposited alumina and PSS modified MWCNT supported PPy afforded viable protection during the 1 M sodium chloride test. The coatings containing PSS modified and weakly sulfonated MWCNTs (at volume fractions of 9.9 × 10-4 and 2.5 × 10-4) with PPy volume fractions of 3.5 × 10-3 and 2.5 × 10-3 provided effective corrosion prevention during the 1 M sodium chloride and hydrochloric acid solution tests. While inhibitor particles were characterized by IR spectroscopy, corrosion products formed at the paint-steel interface were studied by XPS. Apart from the electron microscopy observations, rheol. study of three-dimensional structure of the inhibitor particles was performed in dispersions at similar compositions to those used for the paint formulations. Thus, protection mechanism relating to both types of immersion tests is discussed in terms of properties of the inhibitor particles and their microstructure in the coatings.

Grafted copolymers polyaspartic acid/diethylenetriamine(denoted as PASP/DETA) and polyaspartic acid/1-amino-2-naphthol-4-sulfonic acid(denoted as PASP/1, 2, 4) were synthesized with urea, maleic anhydride, diethylenetriamine and 1-amino-2-naphthol-4-sulfonic acid as the starting materials. The chem. structure of as-synthesized products was analyzed by IR spectrometry; and their scale inhibition performance in industrial water was tested. Results show that PASP/DETA possesses excellent scale inhibition performance against Ca3(PO4)2, and PASP/1, 2, 4possesses excellent scale inhibition performance against CaCO3. When PASP/DETA and PASP/1, 2, 4 are combined at a concentration of 5 mg/L and 1.5 mg/ L, they have a scale inhibition efficiency of 95.4% against CaCO3 and of 95.2% against Ca3(PO4)2.

A new method for the separation, preconcentration, and determination of gold(III) ion in water samples was developed. It is based on the use of activated carbon that was modified with 1-amino-2-naphthol-4-sulfonate to yield a solid-phase sorbent. The exptl. conditions for adsorption were optimized. Gold(III) can be quant. adsorbed at pH 3, and adsorbed gold(III) can be completely eluted with 2.0 mL of a 2% solution of thiourea in 1 M HCl. The enrichment factor is 200, and the maximum adsorption capacity is 32 mg g-1. Au was then determined by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry. The detection limit (3σ) is 0.26 μg L-1, and the RSD is 3.1% (n = 8). Common potentially interfering ions do not interfere with the adsorption and determination of the analytes. The method displays selectivity, sensitivity and reproducibility, and was successfully applied to the determination of reference materials and water samples.

The structure-activity relationship (SAR) studies exhibited that the derivatives incorporated with pyrido[3,2-d]pyrimidine, naphtho[2,3-e][1,3]oxazine-5-sulfonic acid, benzo[d]thiazole and benzo[d]oxazole scaffolds revealed the highest cytotoxic activities comparing with doxorubicin as a reference drug. The promising derivatives 5, 9, 13 and 15 were subjected to enzymic inhibitory assessment against CDK-2/cyclin A2 using roscovitine as a standard Concerning their effects upon the apoptotic process, they upregulated Bax, p-53 and caspase-3 levels and downregulated Bcl-2, causing induction of apoptosis. Moreover, the in silico mol. docking was applied to investigate the possible binding modes and orientations within the active site of CDK-2.

A 1-[2-hydroxynaphthylazo]-6-nitro-2-naphthol-4-sulfonate/ CuO nanoparticles modified carbon paste electrode (HNNSCCPE) was constructed and the electro-oxidation of isoprenaline at the surface of the modified electrode was studied using cyclic voltammetry (CV), chronoamperometry (CHA), and square wave voltammetry (SWV). Under the optimized conditions, the square wave voltammetric peak current of isoprenaline increased linearly with isoprenaline concentrations in the range of 1.0×10-7 to 7.0×10-4 M and detection limit of 5.0×10-8 M was obtained for isoprenaline. The prepared modified electrode exhibits a very good resolution between the voltammetric peaks of isoprenaline, acetaminophen and N-acetyl-L-cysteine which makes it suitable for the detection of isoprenaline in the presence of acetaminophen and N-acetyl-L-cysteine in real samples.

We report herein two optical probes (R1 and R2) for the fluorogenic detection of Al3+ at the level of 10-8 M. R1 and R2 were synthesized by simple Schiff base condensation of 4-amino-3-hydroxy-1-naphthalene sulfonic acid with 5-bromosalicaldehyde and 2-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde, resp. The same were characterized by various spectroscopic techniques. R1 and R2 both underwent fluorescence emission upon their resp. interactions with Al3+ in an ethanol : water mixture (4 : 1, volume/volume). The binding modes of the receptors with Al3+ were studied through 1H NMR spectroscopy, Job plots, and HR-MS, as well as through binding constant determination involving fluorescence titration data. The quenching of -C=N isomerization and of photoinduced electron transfer (PET) seem to be responsible for the fluorogenic switch-on situation of R1 and R2 with Al3+. At the same time, excited state intramol. proton transfer (ESIPT) also plays an important role in the ratiometric fluorescence response of R2, which is a consequence of a minor structural variation in R1 where the bromophenyl moiety is replaced with a naphthalene moiety. The mechanistic aspects of the sensing phenomenon are discussed in terms of 1H NMR titration as well as theor. calculations at the d. functional level.

Copper(II) complex of 4-amino-3-hydroxynaphthalene-1-sulfonic acid was synthesized and characterized. Upon addition of nitric oxide, the copper(II) center of the complex in methanol undergoes reduction through an unstable copper(II)-nitrosyl intermediate. The formation of the intermediate was confirmed by UV-visible and FTIR spectroscopy. The reduction of the copper(II) center was accompanied with a simultaneous C-nitrosation of the aromatic ring of the ligand. The C-nitrosation product was isolated and characterized by various spectroscopic analyses.

The present study deals with the decolorization and detoxification of Congo red (CR) by a novel marine bacterium Dietzia sp. (DTS26) isolated from Divar Island, Goa, India. The maximum decolorization of 94.5% (100 mg L-1) was observed under static condition within 30 h at pH 8 and temperature 32±2 °C. Bacterially treated samples could enhance the light intensity by 38% and the primary production levels 5 times higher than the untreated. The strain was also able to reduce COD by 86.4% within 30 h at 100 mg L-1 of CR dye. The degraded metabolites of CR dye were analyzed by FTIR, HPLC, GC-MS and the end product closely matches with 4-amino-3-naphthol-1-sulfonate which is comparatively less toxic than CR. Bioassay experiments conducted in treated samples for Artemia franciscana showed better survival rates (after 72 h) at higher concentration of CR (500 mg L-1). This work suggests the potential application of DTS26 in bioremediation of dye wastes and its safe disposal into coastal environment.
