An efficient and environmentally benign biocatalytic strategy for the synthesis of substituted 4-arylamino-1,2-naphthoquinones was developed, through a cross-coupling reaction in which the 1,2-naphthoquinone nucleus, formed in the biocatalytic process mediated by CotA-laccase from Bacillus subtilis, is the key synthetic intermediate. Electrochem. data and kinetic parameters were determined revealing a significant higher specificity of CotA-laccase for 4-amino-3-hydroxynaphthalene-1-sulfonic acid (AHNSA). This ability of CotA-laccase to discriminate between oxidisable aromatic amines allows the set-up of one-pot reactions in the presence of the enzyme, between AHNSA and a set of appropriate aromatic amines under mild reaction conditions.

The acid-base properties of naphthalen-1-ol (L1), naphthalene-1,5-diol (L2), and 4-amino-3-hydroxynaphthalene-1-sulfonic acid (L3) were characterized from pH-metric measurements in pure water and in different concentrations (0-4 mol kg-1) of aqueous KCl solutions at the temperature range of T = (293.15 to 213.15)K at 5K intervals. The results reveal that naphthalen-1-ol and naphthalene-1,5-diol mols. have two ionizable protons (of the hydroxyl groups) while 4-amino-3-hydroxynaphthalene-1-sulfonic acid has three ionizable protons (hydrogen ion of the hydroxyl group, SO3H, and NH3+). Modeling of the data was done by applying Debye-Hoeckel model.The protonation and the solvation processes of all studied ligands are spontaneous and endothermic processes. Also the solubilities of naphthalen-1-ol, naphthalene-1,5-diol, and 4-amino-3-hydroxynaphthalene-1-sulfonic acid were determined The data were analyzed using Setschenow equation and the values of Setschenow coefficients (Km) were determined From the solubility data, the activity coefficients were obtained. The values of the total solubilities (ST) for naphthalen-1-ol and naphthalene-1,5-diol were found equal to the values of their neutral species (S0). On the other hand, the total solubility for 4-amino-3-hydroxynaphthalene-1-sulfonic acid is different from that of its neutral species.The results also indicate solubility decrease in pure water from L1-L2-L3.

The voltammetric behavior of 1-(1-hydroxy-4-methyl-2-phenylazo)-2-naphthol-4-sulfonic acid (Calmagite) was studied by square-wave voltammetry (SWV), differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), cyclic voltammetry (CV) and d.c. voltammetry (DCV) in different electrolyte media. The voltammograms recorded at a glassy C electrode (GCE) exhibit one cathodic peak, corresponding to the two-step four-electron reduction process of azo compound The observed shift of the compound reduction peaks to more neg. potentials with increasing pH indicates that H ions are involved in the electrode reaction. Wastewater containing 1-amino-2-naphthol-4-sulfonic acid (ANS) is mainly derived from the dye production process, causing serious environmental problems. In this work, extraction of ANS from wastewater was carried out using trioctylamine (TOA) under condition of Me iso-Bu ketone (MIBK) as a diluent. The effects of diluent type, concentration of TOA, temperature and pH on the distribution coefficient (D) were discussed in detail. The results showed that the value of D = 76 was obtained with TOA (1.41 mol kg-1) + MIBK at 25°C and pH = 1.1. After that, the extraction mechanism was determined by analyzing the chem. bonds of the complex compound using UV-vis, FT-IR and 1H NMR. The exptl. results showed that the extractant could be regenerated by back extraction Specially the distillation process was simulated using Aspen Plus and the results verified its feasibility in the process of extractant regeneration. The proposed extraction system is conductive to both environment and technol.

A new compound, 2-boronobenzaldehyde-(2′-hydroxyl-4′-sulfonic acid) naphthalene hydrazone (1), was synthesized and its structure was characterized by 1H NMR, mass and element analyses. The presence of Pb2+ led 1 to undergo colorimetric and fluorescent changes, which were detectable with the naked eye. Thus, a dual spectral response for Pb2+ detection was introduced. In KH2PO4-NaOH buffer aqueous solution (pH 6.0), 1 exhibited fluorescence enhancement at 568 nm and hyperchromicity at 595 nm upon the addition of Pb2+. The fluorescent intensity change was proportionate to the concentration of Pb2+ with a dynamic working range of 5.0 × 10-7 mol L-1 to 1.0 × 10-4 mol L-1 and a detection limit of 3.7 × 10-8 mol L-1. The fluorometric method was successfully applied for the detection of Pb2+ water of Qianhu Lake and soil in Nanchang university campus. The recoveries were 111-116% for water and 97.6% for soil, resp., determined via the standard addition method.

A new voltammetric method was developed for the simple, rapid and inexpensive determination of 8-hydroxyquinoline (8HQ) on a modified electrode obtained by the electrodeposition of 1-amino-2-naphthol-4-sulfonic acid (ANSA) on the surface of a glassy carbon (GC) electrode. The electrode interfacial properties were investigated by electrochem. impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The electrochem. response of the ANSA-GC electrode toward 8-hydroxyquinoline was investigated by the use of square wave voltammetry. The ANSA-GC modified electrode showed two linear plots with 8-hydroxyquinoline concentrations from 5 x 10-7 to 1.4 x 10-5 mol dm-3 (R2 of 0.9984) and from 1.4 x 10-5 to 4.25 x 10-4 mol dm-3 with a correlation coefficient R2 equal to 0.9967. The limit of detection was 1.6 x 10-7 mol dm-3. The ANSA-GC modified electrode also showed excellent stability and reproducibility for up to two weeks. The anal. application of the ANSA-GC modified electrode was investigated for the determination of 8-hydroxyquinoline in a blush cosmetic product. The results in good agreement to those obtained by spectrophotometry as a standard method.

Dynamic adsorption of the mixed aqueous 1,2,4-acid and 2-naphthol solution by D201 resin shows that, to the leak point of 1,2,4-acid, the adsorption effluent contained essentially 2-naphthol only, and 1,2,4-acid was completely adsorbed by the resin. With the increase of the resin bed and the decreases of the initial concentration and flow rate, the leak point was prolonged and the separation coefficient of 1,2,4-acid for 2-naphthol was improved. 1,2,4-Acid adsorbed on the column was eluted quant. by 15% (weight) NH4Cl and 20% (volume) ethanol solution

Experiments on the treatment process of 1,2,4-acid wastewater combined ferric-carbon microelectrolysis with Fenton oxidation process are carried out. The 1,2,4-acid wastewater is produced in the production process of 6-nitry (6-nitro-1-diazo oxygen naphthalene-4-acid). The exptl. conditions of Ferric-Carbon microelectrolysis, including pH value, reaction time, reaction temperature, Fe/C ratio and dosage of active carbon are studied. Fenton oxidation conditions of pH value, dosage of H2O2 and the economy data of the process are analyzed. Through single-factor experiments, the conditions for treating acid wastewater are found out. PH value is 1, Fe and C mass ratio is 3:1, and iron-carbon microelectrolysis reaction time is 3 h. The iron-carbon micro-electrolysis water is filtered to adjust its pH value into 3, then 2.5% wastewater of H2O2 with mass fraction of 30% is added, a reaction is performed at room temperature for 1 h, the pH value is adjusted into 7∼8, and then the iron-carbon micro-electrolysis water is filtered. The removal efficiency of COD of raw water can be improved to more than 95%. The cost of wastewater treating is 5.4 yuan/m3.
